Cleft Palate Puppy

They are worth saving

A cleft is an opening in the palate, or roof of the mouth.  It is an open passage from mouth to nasal passages.  Cleft palates can vary greatly in the placement and size of the opening.  The problem lies in that due to these openings, puppies cannot make a suction which is necessary for normal nursing, it also allows anything entering the mouth to potentially pass into the nasal passages and sinuses. Of main concern are liquids or moistened foods which will subject the pup or dog to sinusitis and possibly pneumonia.

A lot of people do not realize how much time it can take to look after them. For the first two weeks they need feeding every 2hr around the clock and every 3-4hr when they reach 3-4 weeks old. If you don't have the ability, time or desire to put in the time to raise them, please euthanize instead of letting them starve to death.

Many cleft puppies are being saved around the world, the Vets that recommended euthanasia are getting to see how good these puppies can do, and what a normal, healthy, active life they can live. The Vets usually recommending euthansia also beacuse that is what they learned in Vet school, it has been the normal recommendation for years and years.

They also believe clefts have to be repaired ASAP for the puppy to survive.  That is not always true.

They can do everything else any dog can and they live a full great quality life.
